Silverfish Control

Safe for all (Unless you're a bug)

Silverfish Control

Silverfish is a type of wingless insect that is usually about half an inch in length. It got its name from the silver colour of its scales and the fish-like movement it makes as it scampers across a surface. Also commonly known as fishmouth, carpet sharks, paramite or Lepisma Saccharina, they have been around for about 300 million years and now they are among the most hated household pests.

Silverfish females can lay more than 100 eggs during their lifetime. The eggs hatch in three to six weeks and the young bugs initially look white but they will take on the adult colour in four to six weeks. Depending on the species, silverfish can reach maturity in three to twenty-four months and the adults can live between two to eight years. They thrive in moist and damp places such as attics, closets, bathrooms, kitchens and anywhere there is stagnant water. These small insects usually get into the house by hitchhiking in bags, boxes and packed goods that have been stored in a humid environment. Silverfish is quite destructive since they munch on almost anything - starched fabrics, silk, synthetic fibres, cereals, book bindings, glues, pastes, dog and cat food, among others. The feeding marks can be distinguished by their irregularly-shaped holes, notches and scrapings. They usually eat their way through wallpaper and leave the characteristic yellow stains on fabrics.

There are different silverfish control products in the market today that can help you get rid of this pest. Some people use chemicals and traps to eliminate silverfish from their homes. However, one should be extra careful when using any chemicals because they can be potentially harmful to children and pets. Moreover, it has been shown that silverfish eradication can be more effective when you don't rely solely on chemicals because pesticides will only kill the adults. The key to complete silverfish eradication involves knowing how to kill all the eggs. However, silverfish eggs are quite difficult to find and destroy. So if you don't want to go through any hassles and avoid the risk of becoming sick, it would be wise to seek the help of a professional pest control company that uses safe and environmentally friendly sprays and dusts. This way, you won't have to worry about any silverfish problems again.
